About Me

Anchor 1

My name is Sherry Lynne Shelton and I am running for IPS School Board District 3. I was born and raised in the IPS community. I attended James Whitcomb Riley #43 K-8, and Broad Ripple High School 9-12. I earned a B.S. in Mathematics/Computer Science from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. I have served and supported the educational needs of our community's children for over 20 years. As a member of the community, running for the school board will allow me to continue working and advocating for equity in education.

I believe that a school board must be responsive and approachable to parents, staff, students, and the community at large to encourage an open, transparent dialog. The board must take feedback from all groups and assess all of the facts before making a decision. A board member is a representative of the community that elects him or her. That representative must be reachable and willing to collaborate with all members of the community, including all district staff. A school board member must build public trust and support. I want to be that transparent steward who is chosen by the community to represent your best interests in IPS.

My efforts as a board member would focus on serving all children in the community. Every child deserves the same level of resources, experiences, and opportunities. To ensure that every child receives this, all of the stakeholders, including classified and certified district staff, parents, and students must be partners in this venture if we are to be successful.

A school board’s main responsibility is to create a long-term vision, mapping a course that provides the necessary opportunities that students need to reach their full potential. The board is responsible for establishing and maintaining a structure that supports this vision, empowers the staff, and provides leadership. With my experience and knowledge of our district I can help to provide the necessary leadership to continue to move the district forward. I strongly believe that we have remarkable teachers and staff working with our children. We must re-establish trust and optimism amongst all district employees, and work to return confidence and trust throughout our community.

I ask for your support to help me work for equity in education for our IPS students, staff, and community.
